Maison Martin Margiela Duvet Coat

28/06/2025

This Reddit post actually highlighted it first, but I wanted to share some thoughts on Maison Margiela’s Autumn/Winter 1999–2000 collection—specifically the duvet coat, which remains such an interesting piece.

What surprised me was learning that the coats weren’t made from actual used or vintage duvets, as I’d thought. Margiela commissioned a factory that typically works with bedding— Featherlight—to produce them. The goal was to replicate the construction and feel of a real duvet as closely as possible.

One detail I really enjoyed: the option to choose different covers for your duvet coat, much like changing the cover on a real duvet.

Even though these coats were produced in an industrial setting, the concept lends itself to upcycling. Duvets—and their covers—could be reimagined into coats or jackets in a more DIY or circular fashion context.
